Head Injury Care Instructions
If You Have Been Treated for a Head Injury
After examination, if the doctor determines that your injury is not severe enough to require hospitalization, you may return home. However, it is important to carefully follow these instructions.
Recommendations for Patients with Head Injuries
1. Avoid Physical Activity
- Avoid all forms of exercise and strenuous activities
- For at least 24 hours
2. Diet
- Eat soft and easy-to-digest foods
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid alcoholic beverages
3. Medication
- Take pain relievers only as prescribed by your doctor
- Do not buy or take additional medication without medical advice
4. Care and Monitoring
- A caregiver should stay nearby
- Wake the patient every 2–4 hours
- To assess alertness and responsiveness
Return to the Hospital Immediately If These Symptoms Occur
Warning Signs
- Increased drowsiness or loss of consciousness
- Confusion, difficulty speaking, or seizures
- Weakness in the arms or legs
- Very slow pulse or high fever
- Severe nausea or repeated vomiting
- Severe headache that does not improve after medication
- Blood or clear fluid coming from the ears or nose
- Neck stiffness
- Blurred vision, double vision, or severe dizziness
Important Reminder
The brain is a vital organ. A serious head injury can be life-threatening. Do not ignore abnormal symptoms, and monitor the patient closely at all times.
