Allergies and symptoms
Allergies can cause a few symptoms. Even though the symptoms can vary, its cause comes from the same mechanism.
Allergic rhinitis: Nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose. Itchy ears, itchy lips, post nasal drip. These symptoms can be seasonal e.g. hay fever during spring, or perennial.

6. Gastrointestinal Reflux (GERD)
The most experienced symptoms for patients with GERD are a burning sensation in the chest and frequent bloating.
- In terms of ENT, there is an acid reflux which impacts the larynx. Since the larynx has softer tissue than the esophagus, it is not as resistant to acid as the esophagus. Even a small amount of gastric acid can cause much irritation to the larynx. The symptoms are different from GERD. Patients usually have hoarseness from an unknown cause, which is a symptom of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. This doesn’t mean that everyone who experiences hoarseness has Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. Some patients feel a lump in their throat but upon examination, they don’t have laryngopharyngeal reflux. Some patients have a persistent cough that doesn’t originate from this disease.
- Please visit a doctor if you have the following chronic symptoms.
1. Hoarseness, difficulty producing voice
2. Feeling the need to cough or excessive throat clearing
3. A sensation of excessive mucus or post nasal drip
4. Difficulty swallowing food, liquid, or drug tablets
5. Persistent cough especially after a meal or when leaning down
6. A sensation that there’s a lump in the throat that doesn't go away with repeated swallowing
7. Heartburn, chest pain, frequent acid reflux
8. Difficulty breathing or frequent choking
9. Tooth decay, bad breath
- Diagnosis
If you have Laryngopharyngeal Reflux, you will have several swollen areas in the larynx e.g. vocal cord, larynx tissue, laryngeal tumor, or thick mucus in the larynx. The diagnosis can be done by ENT examination. Fiberoptic Laryngoscopy may be required in some cases without hospitalization.
