Overview

Stroke
“Stroke” or hemiparesis/paralysis is the a cerebrovascular disorder. The brain blood vessels are clogged or ruptured causing the insufficiency of blood flow to the brain. As a result, the brain can’t function properly. The degree of neurological symptoms can vary depending on the size and location of the affected brain, and the duration of insufficient blood flow, which is when the symptoms start until receiving treatment. If provided with the right treatment swiftly, the recovery and symptoms can be greatly impacted.

There are 2 types of stroke as below.
• Ischemic stroke. 80-85% of patients with stroke are caused by the hardening of blood vessels from various risk factors including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and advanced age. Smoking also causes the narrowing or clogging of blood vessels and inadequate brain tissue blood perfusion.
• Hemorrhagic stroke. 10-15% of patients with stroke are caused by high blood pressure which results in inflexibility of blood vessels and rupture. If the ruptured blood vessels are located in a vital location e.g. brain stem, it can result in a swift death.

Risk factors for Stroke
• High blood pressure causes degenerative blood vessels because the blood pumped out of the heart has a higher pressure. Blood vessels become degenerative rapidly, lack of flexibility, rigid, and prone to damage.
• Diabetes is the condition that fasting blood sugar is higher than 126 mg/dL. This increases the risk of stroke.
• High blood cholesterol causes the lipid plaque to accumulate on the blood vessels wall and result in blood perfusion insufficiency in different organs. If the organ involved is brain, it can cause ischemic stroke and paralysis eventually.
• Heart Diseases e.g. Artherosclerosis, Heart valve diseases, Arrythmias
• Smoking and Alcohol consumption
• Obesity. Obese population has a higher change to have diabetes and high blood pressure, or both. ( <39 inches waist line in male and <35 in female)
• Advanced age is relative to the degeneration of blood vessels.
• Lack of physical exercise
• Mental stress

*From medical statistics, more than 30% of the patients with stroke are caused by arrhythmias. Without treatment, the mortality rate is higher than 13%.
