Diagnosis and treatment

Electrocardiogram (EKG)
Electrocardiogram is used for preliminary heart diagnosis by probing the electrical signals generated from the heart muscle while contracting. The electrical signal indicates the heart rhythm over a period of time using electrodes placed on the chest skin. The recording is shown on the screen of an external device.

Exercise Stress Test
This test helps establishing if there’s a hidden blockage in the arteries by monitoring the change in EKG while exercising with full capacity. The test can show if the blood supply is inadequate as a result Atherosclerosis.

Echocardiography
Echocardiography uses the echoes of high-frequency sound waves sent through the chest cavity to the heart by a special device called transducer. This test helps diagnosing severity and follow-up treatment of cardiovascular diseases effectively, especially congenital heart disease, valvular heart defect, cardiomyopathy, pericardial heart disease.

Transesophageal Echocardiogram : TEE
This test can detect heart abnormalities more specifically in the areas which can’t be detected by normal high-frequency sound waves.

Coronary heart disease diagnosis with 128 Slices CT Scan
Previously, the diagnosis of artherosclerosis needs insertion of catheter and injecting with contrasting agent to detect calcified and fibro-lipid plaque. Now the plaque can be seen from 128 Slices CT Scan without contrasting agent or catheterization. It can also specify how much the plaque has narrowed the arteries by injecting medication to the IV tube inserted in the arm. The patients then hold their breath for approximately 12 seconds. The computer will construct an image and show the degree of blockage. This determines the treatment and follow-up course.

24-hour Holter Monitoring EKG
Holter monitor is a portable device attached to the body monitoring EKG for 24 hours. You can return home and carry on your normal activities while it detects EKG abnormality within 24-48 hours. This test is suitable for the patients with transient palpitation, fainting, dizziness, abnormal rapid heart rate, but are symptom-free when visiting the clinic.

Radiofrequency Ablation for Arrhythmias
This treats arrhythmias by ablation without surgery but via a catheter by sending electricity to the area the starts the irregular rhythm. After the treatment procedure, medications are no longer required.

Open Heart Surgery
- Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) is the treatment for patients with severe angina, which balloon angioplasty can’t be performed.
- Valve Replacement. When the heart valve is too damaged to be repaired, the valve replacement surgery is required. The replacing heart valve can be metal or human/animal tissue. Both types of valves have different advantages and indications depending on different patients. The valve replacement surgery generally takes 4-6 hours.
- Valve Repair is for the defective heart valve that can still be repaired. The patient might not require anticoagulant medication as it may cause complications such as haemorrhagic stroke. The advantage of this surgery is it uses your own tissue.
- Congenital heart defect surgery. Congenital heart defects that can be found include Atrial/Ventricular Septal Defect, and cyanotic congenital heart disease. These kinds of heart diseases require surgical treatment to prevent complications that may occur in the future, though asymptomatic currently. The complications include infection associated with persistent pulmonary hypertension.
- Aortic aneurysm surgery. Patients with aortic aneurysm will experience symptoms of sudden chest pain radiating to the back. Patients who are at risk of aortic aneurysm also require the replacement surgery of aorta with artificial aorta to prevent the aneurysm which can cause sudden death.

Permanent Pacemaker Implantation.
This is a treatment for patients with Bradycardia (slow heart rate), which can cause syncope or sudden death, by implanting pacemaker in the chest cavity.
